The Thick Thin Fold is a folding screen that uses a singular material - Formica's Surrel, an artificial stone, sculpted by digitally controlled milling machine to achieve both structural strength and translucency, two tasks accomplished traditionally by wood and rice paper respectively.
The thickness of the Surrel slab varies from 4 mm to 40mm from one end to another thus creates a gradual change of light that comes through the furniture piece. The project engages advanced technology to push theproperties of the material Surrel to the extreme while acknowledging age-honored craftsmanship of China.
