The Peking University (Qingdao) International Conference Center is located on the ocean front in Qingdao. The site is a steep slope where the elevation drops 20 some meters from the access road to the water. Such topography inspires an approach to the architecture of the conference center as a transition in the landscape or an experience of descending to the sea. The building form thus takes on a linear sequence of interior and exterior platforms and staircases. The finale of the downward movement is the balcony outside of the main conference hall, which projects into the open space of the waterfront. In other words, not creating an object in a field, the building structure is rather merged into the site and becomes an element of the landscape. Five existing villas are remodeled to become the hotel component of the center. The roofs of the villas are made accessible therefore constitute other levels of the topographical formation.
